My kids, being children of mine, are well-versed in grammar and therefore know all about the passive voice. Lizzy even had no trouble with it when it came up in Latin. They have learned that the passive voice is used:
- To emphasize the object
- When there is no clear doer of the action, or
- If there is good reason not to name the doer.
Here are some examples of the passive construction.
Mistakes were made.
The running sink was forgotten about.
Water was carried throughout the house infrastructure by the HVAC system.
Drainage holes were drilled.
Every receptacle we could find was used to catch leaks.
Damage was done.
Regret was felt.
Repairmen were sent for.
Not all water has yet been removed.
Unplanned renovations are being done.
