Summer vacation

I’m well and truly done now. As I write I’m in the shade of a tree, feeling the gentle breeze and listening to the sound of joyously free schoolchildren at the pool.

Caleb (and by extension, I) finished his spelling career, as well as his Latin and logic careers, when he finished school last week.

We got the DMV authorization in the mail on Tuesday and started Liz’s driving lessons immediately: fifty minutes of “observing” me and fifty minutes of doing it herself, every day for seven days.

Caleb’s last day of school was Friday, and he immediately celebrated by inviting a friend over and going swimming with Dad, who is conveniently not working and therefore amenable to hanging out at the pool every day.

Day 5 we tackled parallel parking.

Going a week straight, taking only Sunday off, and covering interstate merging, high-speed passing, construction-zone navigating, using a left turn lane in traffic, spinning through roundabouts, reverse parking, and everything else on the state-mandated drivers ed scavenger hunt, we completed Day 7 yesterday. Now she just needs a few dozen practice hours and seven more months of life before her license test.

And I’m ready for two and a half months of lying in the grass with a book.
