Twas the night before school starts and all through the house
Mom breathed in deep as kids quietly groused
Educational posters were hung up with care
Paper, crayons and books stacked everywhere
Eldest's curricula gleamed crisp and new
Not having yet been marred with errant glitter glue
Second child's lessons the same books call for
And it's clear from the edges they have been used before
Third and fourth children arrived in school late
Which is why their curricula holds together with tape
The children got bundled up early to bed
The last shreds of prior learning drained from their heads
Preschooler to big kid
And tweener to tot
School starts tomorrow
Ready or not.
